Oct. 11 was the DAR National Day of Service all across America with chapters going above and beyond their usual level of giving, and the local Waightstill Avery Chapter was certainly no exception.

Moonyean Wood, chairman of the event, organized a small team of women to gather and deliver a veritable feast for various first responder agencies in the county, including the sheriff, police, and fire departments and EMS. Lunch consisted of homemade egg salad sandwiches, artichoke and spinach dip, a homemade cheese ball and crackers, and cookies.

The crowning dessert, however, was a series of cakes with, "Thank you for your service," in scripted on them. The group of women also presented the agencies with a framed certificate signed by the DAR State Regent Carole Weiss.

According to Wood, over 75 first responders were served in the community.

"We received a beautiful thank you note from the sheriff's department, and a phone call from EMS thanking us again for being so caring and reaching out to our community," Wood said.

Wood states that the event was so successful. She proposes an event be planned on an annual basis.

"Our organization really stepped up and provided delicious food to be shared with our first responders. We truly were 'Daughter's on a Mission,'" she said.
