Art Loeb's Daughter Celebrates 50th Anniversary Of Trail Dedication

Loeb rests on Shining Rock, the feature the surrounding wilderness area is named for, in 1963. Hikers can now hike to Shining Rock via the Art Loeb Trail.

Fifty years ago on Nov. 9, 1969 a 30-mile trail was dedicated to my father, Arthur J. Loeb. As a tribute to him, after an early death on Dec. 5, 1968, when he was 54, the U.S. Forest Service and the Carolina Mountain Club, linked several trails together in Pisgah National Forest. They blazed the path with yellow paint. On top of the paint, a stenciled image of a hiker with a walking stick carrying a rucksack was emblazoned.
