Miller Changes Community, One Dog At A Time – Brevard, NC

Hanging on tightly behind her team of sled dogs as they raced toward an Eskimo village, Jodi Miller marveled at the magnificence of the Alaskan Yukon-Kuskokwin delta.

It was the late 1970s and back in Boston, Miller's parents wanted their daughter, a recent nursing school graduate, to get married, start a family and work in a Boston hospital.

But Miller, whose family nickname was "Rebel," longed for adventure.

She found it in Alaska.

Learning From The Eskimos

Hired by the Indian Public Health Service, Miller settled in Bethel, a tiny village in southwestern Alaska.
