The state of North Carolina did a disservice to the students and residents of this state when it decided to eliminate funding for teaching English-speaking students a second language in elementary school. For several years, elementary school students had a second language, usually Spanish, teacher. But when the budget became tighter, one of the first items to be eliminated was funding for these teachers. Only one elementary school in the county, Brevard Academy, now offers Spanish classes.
