On April 9, downtown Brevard was battered by an unprecedented hailstorm. It was then followed by a recorded 2.23 inches of rain to wash it away. (Times photo) "I've never seen anything like this in the almost 50 years that I've lived here," said Brevard Mayor Jimmy Harris. "I've never heard such a racket in all my life. It tore up the signage in front of Harris Hardware."

•Over the Jan. 12-13 weekend, the partial government shutdown surpassed the previous 21-day record and its impacts were felt in Transylvania County, from trail maintenance on public lands to the wallets of local nonprofits.

As of Jan. 14, the shutdown was in its 24th day, three days longer than the shutdown during the Clinton administration in the winter of 1995-96.

Congressional Democrats and President Donald Trump were at a stalemate over funding a $5.7 billion wall...
