Local Rider Makes Wintertime Biking A Ritual

Golden hour approaches as I motor through the French Broad River floodplain. Farms and railroads become a blur in the rear-view mirror.

It's a brisk winter afternoon and I'm late to meet friends at the local trailhead. We are continuing the tradition of riding bikes each Tuesday evening, typically in Pisgah National Forest near Brevard, DuPont or Bent Creek, with beverages and a simple meal to follow.

As the days become shorter, and autumn transitions to winter, these outings quickly necessitate jackets and headlamps, taking to the trails illuminated by narrow beams of light.
