Cathey's Creek News

January 23, 2020

I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Patricia Elaine Goings Wells, 77, on Saturday, Jan. 18. Her husband, Russell, passed away in 2016. Also, her parents, George and Lila Goings, preceded her in death. She is survived by two sons, David and Mark, a daughter, Lisa Newman, grandchildren and one great granddaughter. She is also survived by two sisters, Janice and Sherry, and one brother, Ron.

Her service will be at 2 p.m., Jan. 22, at Moody Connolly Funeral Home. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Internment will be at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory. Pat will be missed by her family and friends. Praying for the family. My husband, Marshall, was Pat’s first cousin and grew up together with her and the other cousins who lived in close proximity to each other. When Pat and Russell got married, we went with them. We were newlyweds, too.

At Cathey’s Creek Community Center

In the Bible Mission meets every Sunday morning at the community center, starting at 10 a.m., with Sunday school/Bible study and singing and preaching with Rev. Pete Lee, which starts at 11 a.m. Visitors are always welcome to join them.

2020 Census Rosman Area Job Fair

The upcoming Census Job Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Jan. 31, at the Rosman Community Center. The census is offering hourly wages of $17 and 58 cents per mile.

The Window

My mailbox post is fuzzy. I kept thinking it was covered with moss. It seems to appear to be mostly on the North side and is the same moss that is all over the Maple tree that grows close by. It isn’t moss. It is lichen. The kind that is growing on my mailbox and Maple tree is fruticose lichenized. I noticed that my mailbox isn’t the only one, and after really paying attention. It is everywhere. Lichen is not harmful to trees and is not parasitic. It just uses surfaces to “sit” on. It is also an indicator of air purity. So, there, I will just leave it alone. If it gets to where I can’t get into the mailbox, I might have to get a new post.

Cathey’s Creek History Project

Because it was such a cold day this past Monday, and several people couldn’t be at the meeting, we postponed it. We will meet next Monday at the usual time and place. We have an outline, and the project is coming along well.
