At the Transylvania County Board of Education meeting Monday evening, Carolyn Barton, director of School Nutrition Services, informed the school board the state of North Carolina does not contribute any funding to provide food to students.

According to Superintendent Jeff McDaris, most of the other states in the Southeast allocate funding to provide food to students.

The federal government is the primary provider of funding for school breakfasts and lunches. In recent years, however, payments from the federal government have not kept pace with rising costs of providing those meals. As a...
