Beth Stang has been appointed chief public defender for the Judicial District that includes Henderson, Transylvania and Polk counties. Stang replaces Paul Welch, who retired at the end of January. Welch had been the district’s only chief public defender since 2008, following legislative action which provided for the opening of public defender offices in various locations across North Carolina.

Stang has worked in the office as an assistant public defender since its inception. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mississippi State University and received her Juris Doctor from Vermont Law School.

Stang, who resides in Hendersonville with her husband, Jon, and their two daughters, has spent more than 13 years working as an attorney and advocate for individuals charged with crimes who cannot afford to pay for their defense. She is a board certified specialist in state criminal law and qualified to represent individuals facing the death penalty. Stang cites improving access to behavioral health resources for clients and support to fellow criminal defense attorneys as priorities in her new role.

“I am incredibly honored to be the next chief public defender. As a career public defender, I care deeply about the work that we do and the clients we serve. I look forward to continuing this service in a new role alongside colleagues and peers I respect,” said Stang.
