Lila Laughridge has been awarded a bronze medal for her creative essay entry in the DAR American History Essay Contest.

The fifth-grade Brevard Elementary student was the featured guest at the Feb. 10 meeting of the Waightstill Avery Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution.

This year's essay, "The Voyage of the Mayflower," celebrated the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower's voyage and arrival in the New World. Laughridge's creative essay viewed the trip through the eyes of man's best friend, in this case a friendly mastiff named Archie. In many ways, Archie's master was prepared for the voyage. However, after two months in the new land, Archie's master realized there were other steps he could have taken to make his life in the New World better.

Laughridge is the daughter of Janna and Joey Laughridge. BES Principal Carrie Norris and AIG teacher Lisa Pauer attended the presentation, along with Laughridge's parents. Also attending were Laughridge's grandparents Debby and Jimmie Laughridge and Anne and Grant Smith.

In addition to the bronze medal, American History Chairman Portia Odell presented Laughridge with a DAR certificate and a check for $25. Her essay was forwarded to the District level for judging.
