HCA Billing Problems

Last updated 2/24/2020 at 3:25pm

I have more evidence of problems with HCA. I just received a statement from my insurance provider for services I received in November. Like others have noted, my annual checkup at Brevard Family Practice was billed as Outpatient Services to Mission Community Anesthesiology Specialists (MCAS) LLC. I Googled that and it comes up as an audiologist not an anesthesiologist at all — and I had neither.

I called both Medicare and my insurance carrier to tell them they had been over-billed. The answer I got was that if I received the services I went for — my annual checkup – that I had nothing to complain about. I tried to tell them I was trying to help them by uncovering potential fraud or at a minimum dicey billing practices, but their position was that if I got what I needed, they were satisfied.

They said the bill was from Charlotte, but I looked up the billing practice. It was Asheville with 799 providers in 17 locations.

Thank you to Maureen Copelof for taking the initiative to investigate HCA further as noted in the paper on Feb. 20. There is something not quite right.
