When I called Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves’s office in early February a secretary answered the phone. After identifying myself, she asked me where I was calling from.

I said, “Brevard, N.C.”

She seemed to know the reason why.

I told her that Willie Nash didn’t deserve the 12-year sentence handed down by the Supreme Court of Mississippi. The sentence, in my view, was disproportionate to his crime.

“Will this get to the Governor?” I asked.

She said they were compiling a list of callers and the state...
