The application period for individuals wishing to join VISION Transylvania’s 2020-2021 class opens today.

Applications are available on the VISION Transylvania website, The class fills up quickly, so it’s recommended that interested individuals fill out and submit the application as soon as possible. The class can accommodate up to 40 members of the community. It runs August through May, with once-monthly classes centered around developing leadership skills and learning about different aspects of Transylvania County.

This year’s class marks the 25th class for the leadership development program, which began in 1996 as the brainchild of local businesswoman, Susan Threlkel. Threlkel wanted to create a network of motivated and community-focused leaders to take action to improve Transylvania County. Twenty-five years and more than 700 graduates later, the program continues to produce strong leaders in public service, nonprofit organizations, small businesses and large corporations, as well as a myriad of community volunteers.

VISION is a course offered by Blue Ridge Community College, and participants become students of the college. Each month, students meet for an eight-hour immersion into Transylvania County’s history, its social services, healthcare network, educational institutions, public service offerings, government structure and elected officials, criminal justice system, industry and economic development. Paired with this community education are enrichment activities to enhance leadership skills, teaching class members how to use their skills and passions to plug into and strengthen the county.

“This is the 25th year of VISION Transylvania, and we are thrilled that the interest of this community in this program has remained robust all these years,” said Glenda McCarson, associate vice president of Blue Ridge Community College, Transylvania County campus, and VISION Transylvania Board of Directors vice president. “This silver anniversary promises to be exciting, as we’re relaunching our VIZ Program for high school juniors in Transylvania County Public Schools and developing new funding opportunities to support the educational offerings of this valued program.”

Like any college-level course, tuition is required to participate, but many businesses, schools and civic clubs often cover this tuition to enroll their respective employees, students and members in VISION. Self-pay also is welcomed. Additionally, the VISION Transylvania Board of Directors offers a limited number of scholarships to help some applicants offset the cost of tuition for the program. These scholarships, supported by funding from the Board of Directors, offer the opportunity to participate in VISION Transylvania to those individuals whose workplace or financial situation would otherwise prevent them from enrolling. Scholarship applications are available by emailing, and completed applications are due by March 23.
