Socialism Has Never Worked

Now that many in the Democratic Party have apparently realized that Bernie Sanders and his socialist platform might be harmful to down-ballot Democratic candidates, and to defeating President Trump in November, the fear of our country becoming socialist seems to be waning. The reason is former VP Joe Biden has catapulted himself into being the front-runner in the race for the Democratic nomination for president.

However, discussion of the merits or demerits of socialism will continue to be a topic of conversation, especially among young people, for as long as progressives believe that our country is under the thumb of “millionaires and billionaires,” and that capitalism is an evil system in which the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

Joseph C. Sternberg in a recent column in the Wall Street Journal states that socialism is not the reason many people don’t care for Sen. Sanders; it is that like Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the Labor Party in the UK, they are both unpatriotic and really don’t care for their countries. That is why the British electorate overwhelmingly defeated Mr. Corbyn in the recent UK election. Who, other than Bernie Sanders, takes his honeymoon in the Soviet Union, and praises every left-wing socialist despot from Fidel Castro to Daniel Ortega to Francisco Maduro.

The point is that socialism has never worked as its proponents have intended and cannot possibly do what it promises. Whether one views socialism through the lens of economics as the economist Frederick Hayak, or through the painful observation of human suffering as alleged by U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, it should be clear to all that it is a failed model of governing that has no place in the U.S. or any other country for that matter.
