Superintendent Jeff McDaris has named Missy Ellenberger as director of Career and Technical Education (CTE) and high school curriculum for Transylvania County Schools, effective July 1, 2020.

Ellenberger most recently served as curri-culum director for kindergarten through twelfth grade for the past year. For over 25 years, she has served Transylvania County Schools as teacher, coach, career development coordinator, assistant prin-cipal and central office administrator.

A 1990 graduate of Brevard High School, Ellenberger earned degrees and certifications from the University of North Carol-ina at Wilmington, Grand Canyon University and Western Carolina University, including a master of school administration.

She has been certified since 2006 by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

As a former director of Career and Technical Edu-cation himself, McDaris appreciates the CTE experience that will allow the current curriculum director to make the most of her new combined role.

"I am thrilled for Missy Ellenberger to assume this leadership role for Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, as she continues to provide leadership for high school curriculum," said McDaris. "A former CTE educator, she has experience in elementary, middle and high school and has led with confidence and success at every level, including career develop-ment."

"As Transylvania County Schools positions our system to meet and exceed the MyFutureNC initiative in N.C., we know that leadership matters," added McDaris.

Transylvania County Schools is one of the pilot programs in MyFutureNC (myfuturenc.org), a col-laborative organization that aims to help North Carolina reach 2 million citizens of working age with high-quality credentials or college degrees.

"Missy's knowledge and success in leadership in high schools and CTE will be critical to support our students, teachers, admini-strators, and community partners in achieving this ambitious goal. We will continue to count on her leadership, and I am very pleased she accepted this challenge," he said.

In her new role, Ellenberger is eagerly embracing the opportunity to once more work with elementary and middle school students and their teachers.

"I have spent most of my tenure as a Career and Technical Education teacher," said Ellenberger. "I know firsthand that the value these courses offer our students is immeasurable."

"It is such an honor to have this opportunity to apply my CTE experience," she added, "and I look forward to supporting students on their journey through high school and beyond. We rely heavily on the skills and experience of CTE teachers, counselors and career development coordinators, as well as our partners in higher education and the workforce."

Ellenberger committed to providing a supportive learning environment in Transylvania County Schools.

"Students deserve to have the space and resources to enjoy real-world experiences, foster teamwork skills and enhance communication skills, on the way toward their life goals after graduation. We are proud to give them all of that in CTE and throughout high school," she said.

Ellenberger is married to Detective Mark Ellenberger with the Transylvania County Sheriff's Office. They have two sons - Tanner, a junior at Appalachian State University, and Luke, a freshman at Coastal Carolina University.
