Transylvania County native Carl Conley Jr. was certified earlier this month to appear as an Unaffiliated candidate on November's ballot for the Board of Commissioners.

Conley received the required 1,002 signatures needed on a petition and was verified by the county's Board of Elections.

"I was truly humbled by the support I received from members of the community," he said. "Both Democrat and Republican voters offered their support as I went around with my sheets. I feel that obtaining signatures the 'old fashioned' way was a great way to get out and see possible constituents and get feedback on what the people want out of their elected officials. I also believe that it's proof positive that your party affiliation should hold no bearing on local politics. Strong and effective leadership is something I learned in the Marines. I plan to use those same principles if I am elected to serve."

Conley is a 1995 Brevard High graduate and went on to serve honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1996 to 2000. He resides in Pisgah Forest with his wife, Kristi, and their two daughters, 12-year-old Adaya and 6-year-old Sariah. Conley also has a daughter, 19-year-old Tosha, who resides in California.

Conley joins incumbent Commissioners Mike Hawkins and Page Lemel as Unaffiliated candidates on the general election ballot, when three board seats will be available.

As previously reported, Hawkins and Lemel and Commissioner David Guice changed their party identification from Repub-lican to Unaffiliated.

Guice is not up for re-election this year, but, like Conley, Hawkins and Lemel had to gather names on a petition to appear on the ballot.

Also on the ballot will be Republicans Larry Chap-man, incumbent Jason Chappell and Teresa McCall.

David Siniard filed as a Democrat for the board.
