In April of 1961, an attempt to overthrow the Castro regime failed on the shores of the Bay of Pigs when the Cuban army easily defeated 1,400 Cuban émigrés, armed and trained by the CIA. John Kennedy, in office for only four months, had reluctantly approved the invasion and could easily have blamed the Eisenhower administration, which concocted the half-baked scheme. Instead, he went on national television and told the American people that he had approved the project:
“I take full responsibility for its failure.”
