In response to the coronavirus outbreak, N.C. Rep. Jake Johnson released an update on emergency unemployment reforms that allow residents to access benefits more quickly during the crisis.

The General Assembly changed state law in 2017 to ensure benefits paid during federal disaster declarations may be provided without waiting a week or without showing the usually required job search. State and federal executive orders also allow beneficiaries to apply online and waive penalties for employers, among other emergency changes.

Constituents can create an account and apply for unemployment benefits with the Employment Security Division at

“I understand what an impact this is having on all sectors of our economy as well as your everyday lives. North Carolinas unemployment system has the financial flexibility and policies in place to assist those who need it,” Johnson said. “Working people affected by this crisis should contact the Employment Security Division to apply for unemployment benefits as soon as possible. I urge you to reach out to my office if you have any questions or concerns and I will be happy to help you navigate this process. I know there is a lot of uncertainty right now, but I am committed to working with local, state, and federal officials to make sure relief is available to the individuals and businesses who need it most.”
