While the world fights to contain a new virus, the public is being told to stay safe behind the secure doors of their home.

But what happens when a home is no longer safe, according to a press release from SAFE?

The viral outbreak has caused added stress with layoffs and financial hardships.

In addition to loss of work, children are home from school and people are trying to maintain social distancing.

With more men, women and families spending their time together at home, the self-isolation may help keep people from becoming sick but in-turn increase an already volatile domestic or sexual violence situation, according to the release.

SAFE of Transylvania County wants to ensure the public they will continue to be available for anyone needing help in a domestic or sexual violence situation.

SAFE offices are now currently closed to the general public during this pandemic outbreak.

However, professional staff and volunteers will continue to work and be available by phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week to assist all victims.

SAFE encourages victims to call SAFE to explore options to develop a safety plan or for a caring and empathic ear. For assistance call, (828) 885-7233.

Stacey’s House, a domestic violence shelter, will also remain available to families presently living in the home.

Any additional request for shelter will be reviewed to determine physical threats to victims and children in the household; symptoms of flu and/or virus. Space is very limited at this time.

SAFE strives to lead the community in eliminating domestic violence and sexual violence through prevention, advocacy, education and healing.

While the financial impact on SAFE’s ability to provide services to victims is great during this time of viral disaster, the dedicated staff, volunteers and donors will continue to ensure that every victim’s safety is a priority.

Funding for SAFE is made possible by the contributions of donors and through support of SAFE’s Attic and SAFE Interiors stores.

SAFE’s Attic and SAFE Interior store hours have been adjusted due to the growing pandemic. For more information about SAFE, visit http://www.safetransylvania.org. Contact SAFE at mailing address, P.O. Box 2013, Brevard, NC 28712; or office location, 515 N. Broad St., Brevard.
