'Babies' Propped Up On Shelves At Children's Center

Jody McNiel has had to give the infant dolls from the Baby-Think-It-Over program a well-deserved rest until students return to school.

It's one of the most popular programs at the Children's Center of Transylvania County: high school students pick up infant dolls on Fridays, and by Monday morning they've had a sobering dose of what it's like to take care of a baby.

But right now, with schools closed because of the pandemic, the program's 30 "babies" are propped up on shelves at the Center's offices at 95 S. Johnson St. in Brevard, behaving well, sitting silent and idle.

"It's just like maybe nap time for them," smiled Jody McNiel, who runs the program for the center. "I've got them all cleaned up and recharged, waiting...
