The Facts

Here are the facts that we know about this pandemic. It is deadly and highly contagious. It can be spread by those who won’t show symptoms for up to two weeks. There is no treatment and there is no vaccination. The only way to slow its progression is through social distancing and sanitary precautions. That’s it. End of message.

Unlike other viruses, they don’t even know that once one has recovered from the virus if the body has an immunity to it.

Life as we once knew it has changed dramatically. That said, I am confident that one day there will be treatments and a vaccine. Our attitudes need to change if we are going to survive as a society. We need to distinguish between wants and needs. We also need to realize who is vital to our survival and do our best to support and protect them.

Everyone is important and we all need to do our part based on the facts as we know them.

Not since World War II have Americans faced a challenge that required such a sacrifice from the entire country. Our front line soldiers have switched roles. Doctors, nurses, researchers, first responders, farmers, grocery store clerks, stockers, truckers, manufacturers and tradespeople are our front line warriors.

Others who do not fall into the category of essential workers can do their part by simply staying at home unless it’s absolutely necessary to go out for food or medicine.

There may be shortages, most of which are caused by those who care only about themselves and choose to hoard vital supplies. We still have plenty to eat, clean water to drink, roofs over our heads and clothes on our backs. Things could be a lot worse.

As a nation it is time for us all to pull together. Look out for each other. Help where we can and get by. Together we can get through this. Finger pointing and blame helps no one and is counter-productive. Leave that for the politicians and other non-essential personnel. Stay safe and be smart.
