Carrol "Papaw" Stokes Merrill

Carrol "Papaw" Stokes Merrill went home to be with The Lord at 9:20pm April 23, 2020, surrounded by family at his residence. He was 89 years old. He can hear clearly now and is worshipping our Father in Heaven. Hallelujah!

He was born in Little River June 4, 1930 to the late Gilliard and Sue Merrill. Two infant brothers, J.B. and Gilliard Jr., brothers, Emerson, Theodore, Glen, Ansel and Connell, and sister, Brenda G. Merrill, also preceded him in death.

He married Barbara Jean Chappell (survivor) Aug. 15, 1979, and together they enjoyed their farm, raising cattle and bailing hay for more than 40 years. He worked for Citizens Telephone Company for 50 years, where he moved up in rank from a lineman at 18 years old, to superintendent years before he retired. He made friends everywhere he went. He was a loving and kind man from a generation when a handshake and his word was a done deal.

A faithful member of Enon Baptist Church, he loved the Lord and loved his family well. His best buddy and true friend, Dennis Owen, was like a brother to him. They spent many a day together and "never had a harsh word between them."

He was the father of the late Gary Carrol Merrill, of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Doris Merrill Silvernell and husband, Edgar Silvernell Jr., of Franklin, who survives him. Other survivors include his loving granddaughters, Maria Forester Tritt and husband, Douglas, and children, Emma and Clay, of Edenton, N.C .; Emily Forester Houston and children, Addyson and Mason, of Brevard; and Hannah Forester Leonard and husband, Ronald and children, Dylan and Jillian, of New Bern, N.C .; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Due to COVID19 restrictions, a private graveside service will be held. A memorial service will be held at a later date to celebrate his life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Enon Baptist Church to further the ministry of the Gospel, 4531 Old Hendersonville Hwy, Pisgah Forest, NC 28768.

A special thanks to Linda Shipman, Care Partners Hospice, and others for providing extra special care to our family during this time.

Online condolences may be left at http://www.moodyconnollyfuneralhome. com.

Moody-Connolly Funeral Home and Crematory is caring for the family.
