Local youth sports suffered another blow this week as Transylvania Little League announced the cancellation of its spring season following a meeting of the board of directors on Tuesday night.

According to a post on the league’s official Facebook page, “After examining North Carolina’s plan to lift restrictions it became increasingly apparent that practices would not be able to resume until the week after Memorial Day at the earliest, with games not expected to begin until the middle of June. Given the hectic nature of peoples’ summer schedules with families’ planned vacations, unavailability of umpires and the increased frequency of those afternoon thunderstorms the county often receives, the likelihood of having a traditional season is impossible.”

The statement went on to say that the league is working on the possibility of a sandlot program for this summer, which would be free to all participants and available in baseball and softball. The league is currently searching for coaches who might volunteer for that program.

Transylvania Little League initially postponed play indefinitely following Gov. Roy Cooper’s mandate to close public schools on March 14. At the time, league officials said they would use the governor’s orders as a guideline for when play could resume.

Last Friday, Gov. Cooper announced public schools across the state would be closed for the remainder of the academic year.

In announcing the decision to cancel the season, the league said board members monitored Gov. Cooper’s three-phase approach to lifting COVID-19 related restrictions in North Carolina before making their decision.

While the loss of a Little League season is disheartening, there is also the financial side to consider.

The league said, according to the post, that parents should receive a refund for registration fees in the mail over the next few weeks.

However, the league is also asking for donations from those available to offset “several thousand dollars in expenses that have already been incurred that cannot be recouped related to equipment, uniforms, insurance, charter fees etc.”
