Johnnie Matt Shelton

Johnnie Matt Shelton, 90, of Hayesville, N.C., born Aug. 30, 1929, left us to be with the Lord April 27, 2020. He was a native of Clay County, N.C.
A retired general contractor and heavy equipment operator, he was a member of Moss Memorial Baptist Church in Hayesville. An avid outdoorsman, he was the last founding member of the Hiwassee River Bass Club.
Surviving is his wife of 68 years, Louise Shelton, of Hayesville. He was the father of two sons, the late Robert Gerald “Too Shy” Shelton, and one surviving son, Rev. Charles E. Shelton, and wife, Denise Shelton, of Hayesville; four granddaughters, Hon. Tessa Shelton Sellers and husband, Joe Jack Sellers, of Hayesville, Carissa Shelton Daniels and husband, Matt Daniels, of Hayesville, Dr. Marissa Shelton Peck and husband, Dr. Rob Peck, of Hayesville, and Tiffany Shelton and Mark Gacchina, of Petersburg, Alaska; seven great-grandchildren, Mallory and Matthew Peck of Hayesville, Jackson and Garrett Sellers of Hayesville, and Riley, Lyra, and Everly Gacchina of Petersburg, Alaska. He leaves one sister, Nell Norton, and one sister-in-law, Wanda Shelton, both of Lake Toxaway, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
He was the son of the late Zollie and Edna Shelton of Lake Toxaway. He is preceded in death by five sisters, Mable Owens, Madge York, June Shelton, Veda Vee Shelton and Faye Osteen, as well as four brothers, Grady Shelton, J.D. Shelton, Ted Shelton and Leon Shelton.
A private funeral service will be held Friday, May 1, 2020, at Moss Memorial Baptist Church, with Rev. Charles Shelton and Rev. Eddie Duckworth officiating.
The interment will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be members of the Hiwassee River Bass Club.
A celebration of life will be held for the public at a later date.
