Trump's War On Middle America

I continue to be amazed by letters to the editor that rave about what President Trump has done for those of us in Middle America.

Some facts:

Our tariff war with China has cost each middle class American family an estimated $500-$1,000 annually. China pays nothing, but raises its prices. Corporations pass price increases on to customers, so we basically pay a tax on anything inexpensive that’s made in China.

The president boasts that he’s been the best thing in history for America’s farmers. The reality is that his tariff war has destroyed America’s agricultural markets in China.

You and I got virtually nothing from the 2017 tax cut. It was almost completely aimed at the rich and big business.

Trump’s attempt to kill Obamacare, without offering any replacement plan, would have cut taxes for the wealthy, while removing a major source of affordable health care for millions of working Americans.

When the president had the chance to intervene in oil prices, he raised them, great for big oil, not so great for you and me at the gas pump.

Trump and company are now beginning an attack on the U.S. Postal Service. That’s good for UPS, FedEx and DHL, but not so good for those of us in rural areas.

Hasn’t the president championed manufacturing workers? The truth: this segment made up 8.5 percent of the workforce when Trump took office, and is down to 8.4 percent today, with hourly earnings lagging behind the rest of the workforce. Corporate profits? Up 14 percent over the same period!

The Coronavirus Bill was designed to bail out big business, while some of the rest of us received a one-time $1,200 check designed to cover a family’s expenses for 10 weeks. Real assistance with unemployment insurance, and help for small business, schools and hospitals, has largely come from the House of Representatives.

I’m a retired journalist. I know that rational arguments don’t have much impact on elections. Still, it’s hard to believe that none of my middle class friends seem to see that, while Trump talks the talk, he has done little for them.

His promises to big business, his personal tribe, are largely kept. His promises to those of us in the middle class have been consistently broken.

America, we can do much better than this.
