T.C. Library To Join N.C. Cardinal Consortium

Transylvania County Library has announced that on May 21, 2020, it will be joining NC Cardinal, a growing consortium of 40 public library systems.

NC Cardinal is supported through grant funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Federal Library Services and Technology Act.

On May 21, the library will begin to use the NC Cardinal software (Evergreen) and will start sharing materials from other Cardinal libraries sometime this summer. This means library card holders will be able to borrow from a collection of nearly 7 million items that are shared between counties across the state. Some of the new services available to this community include:

•Borrow materials at any Cardinal library using your Transylvania County library card

•Return borrowed materials to any Cardinal library

•Place holds online for items from Cardinal libraries and have them delivered to the library you choose

•Get text or email notifications for holds

•Opt-in to keeping a history of your check-outs (viewable by account holder only)

•Check-out lengths will increase

•Automatic renewals (if not on hold)

•Update your account password from home

"The expanding opportunities and sharing of resources that joining the NC Cardinal consortium will bring to our community are incredibly beneficial," said Rishara Finsel, director of Transylvania County Library. "I believe our library users are going to be delighted with all of the new options and conveniences that come with being a Cardinal library member, as well as pleasantly surprised at how very much will soon be accessible."

Many of the benefits that Transylvania County library card holders already enjoy will continue. New items will only be available to local library card holders for six months before being available to other Cardinal libraries, and account features like requesting items, renewing checkouts and managing one's account either online, by phone or in-person will continue once the new system is operational.

The shift to the new software system will include a few temporary changes that library card holders should be aware of:

•The library's online catalog and account access will be temporarily unavailable from Saturday, May 16, at 5:30 p.m. until mid-day on Thursday, May 21, during which time library card holders will be unable to search for items, place holds, renew check-outs or log in to their accounts. Staff will be available by phone to assist with curbside check-outs only.

•Current library card holders who have saved custom lists in the online catalog should know that these lists will not be available after the switch to the new software system. The library recommends printing those lists now in order to keep them.

•All PINs for account access will reset to the last four digits of the account number. Once the new system is operational, the library card holder can log-in to change their PIN online if desired.
