When Moses led the Hebrew people out of 400 years of bondage under the yoke of the Egyptians, their new-won freedom came at a painful price. They wandered in the wilderness for 40 years. Life in the wilderness of freedom was harsh and there was a shortage of food and water. At one point “the whole congregation of Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron and said to them, ‘If only we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate our fill of bread…’” (Exodus 16)
