The mountains of western North Carolina have a history of drawing in people seeking clean air, health and wellness.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, nearby Asheville drew in several prominent doctors who promoted mountain air as a cure for tuberculosis.

Other western North Carolina communities were started by wealthy Charleston, S.C., residents looking to establish second homes to escape the heat and mosquitos of the low country summers.
