Bob Youngerman’s letter to the editor, “Statistics Don’t Support Police Bias,” is a prime example of confirmation bias, the tendency to interpret evidence as confirmation of one’s existing beliefs or theories.

The primary source of his letter comes from an article written by Heather McDonald, a conservative political commentator, essayist and attorney with a new book coming out who wrote this article for a right-wing paper. Additionally, many of the statistical analysis in Youngerman’s letter and McDonald’s article are either factually incorrect or inconclusive.
