Reducing Suffering

The reunion of two childhood friends and a march to reject racism graced the front page of the Monday, June 22, issue of The Transylvania Times.

The march drew a large crowd, some of whom spoke of their experiences of racism. The reunion of two childhood friends gives a heart-breaking look at a separation that occurred 30 years ago.

Yvonne Hubbard is white; her friend Patience Camp is black. Hubbard’s father was the Grand Dragon of the Brevard Ku Klux Klan at the time.

The photo on the front page of the paper shows the human joy of connection between two young women.

We need one another. John Donne said it first, “No man is an island.” Certainly the pandemic has taught us that. “We’re all in it together.” I am heartened to think that people are uniting in a true effort to stem the tide of human suffering. Bravo and blessings.
