The Unitarian Universalists of Transylvania County (UU) celebrated its 21st birthday in June by launching "Operation Cupcake."

The church collaborated with John and Katina Hansen, of Blue Ridge Bakery, and Michael Collins, director of Bread of Life, to provide a treat to neighbors who count on the Bread of Life. UU members were invited to "donate" a cupcake, with any profits to go into the church's operating fund.

UU has a long history with Bread of Life, and church members regularly volunteer there preparing meals and, more recently, given the closure of the kitchen to outsiders, preparing and delivering food items to Bread of Life.

"These are tough times, and people need help getting on their feet, but everyone deserves a Blue Ridge Bakery cupcake from time to time," said UU President Susan Zelle

The Bread of Life serves an average of 150 people individual lunches five days a week.

Katina Hansen was up before dawn to finish 156 cupcakes, which were delivered to Bread of Life, just in time to include a cupcake in each meal.

"We need to have fun even in tough times and who doesn't love a cupcake?" she said

Collins appreciated the help from UU and Blue Ridge Bakery.

"It's such a sweet day at Bread of Life because 156 smiles are about to help, and there's a lot of sugar and love in that," he said.
