Happy Birthday

Louise Sharp, who grew up and lived for many years in Rosman and was a nurse for several doctors at the Transylvania Hospital before moving away, will celebrate her 90th birthday on July 26. Her son Randy had planned a birthday party for her, but due to the coronavirus it had to be cancelled. To help celebrate her birthday at a distance and safely, anyone who knew her and would like to send her a card and/or letter enclosed would be great. Her address is Louise Sharp, 604 Bethlehem Church Road, Gordon, Ga., 30131.

She will appreciate having cards and letters from those who were her patients and friends from back home to help celebrate at a distance and safely for everyone.

Shoal Creek Baptist Church

Homecoming/decoration is scheduled for Aug. 2. However, due to Covid-19, Homecoming will be cancelled. Outdoor church/ decoration will be held in the cemetery at 11 a.m., weather permitting. Bring a chair to sit in and please do not bring food. Prior to Aug. 2, come and take old flowers off your family’s graves. If you would like to donate money to help with the cost of upkeep, there is a lockbox in the cemetery, or you can mail your contribution to Shoal Creek Baptist Church, P.O. Box 289, Balsam Grove, N.C., 28708. Thank you.

Pressure Gauge Checked

If planning to can this summer’s vegetables and have a pressure canner with a gauge on it, take it to the N.C. Cooperative Extension Office located at 106 E. Morgan St. in Brevard, to be checked. This is a free service. You should have your canner checked each year before doing any canning. The gauge could be off and you might have lost all of your hard work due to spoiling.

Notice

If you have donations from your yard sales, contact a community club officer to meet you at the community center to put it in the building. Items get ruined if they are just dropped off at the door, and then we have to pay to have it hauled off. We appreciate your cooperation. Calls may be made to Bernice Powell at 884-6058 or Carol Gardner at 884-6247 or any other officer.

God’s Way Food Pantry

We are no longer able to allow after hours pick-up. The food pantry is open every other Saturday from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. The next food pantry will be Saturday, July 25. Drive through service only. If you are sick or unable to come, call to have someone pick up for you. Also, if you need help filling out your census, come by, someone will be there to help you and do it online. Blessings to David, Lydia and staff.

Census Forms

From now until August you can also get help completing the 2020 Census during God’s Way Food Pantry’s July 25 event. We can do it online for you. Anyone who has a P.O. Box who didn’t get the census form can either go online or come have someone help you. Everyone needs to be counted, so that we can get our federal money that is due us!

Community Club

Census Efforts

Regional nonprofits, WNC Communities, is partnering with active community development clubs that participate in the annual WNC Honors Awards Program to assist in getting communities across WNC counted in the 2020 census. The director of community and agriculture programs for WNC Communities, Terri Wells, said, “It is critical that we get all of our community members counted because of the direct impact on funding and services for the next 10 years. At this time, Western North Carolina is underreported, and we are excited to work in partnership with our community development club leaders across Western North Carolina on the WNC Communities Get Counted Program to assist their community members in getting counted. Everyone counts, and we want to ensure that no one is left out. We also appreciate the partnership of Dogwood Health Trust, which is providing funding for this program. This funding directly benefits our participating communities across Western North Carolina. Community efforts are underway this summer to assist community members with getting counted. Community Development Club volunteers are not working for, nor representing the census. As trusted voices in their communities they are volunteering census online. Contact Carol Gardner at 884-6247 or at [email protected] of the Balsam Grove Community Club for more information. All community clubs that work with the WNC Communities are eligible to participate.”

Silver Sneakers On Zoom

Balsam Grove is using a Zoom class to continue our Silver Sneakers program. If you have Silver Sneakers, it’s free. If not, it costs $5 per session. All you need is a device that connects to the internet and the Zoom app. We’ll even help you figure out the technology if you need help. For more information, contact Melissa McCall at 577-3724 or [email protected] It’s lots of fun.
