The COVID-19 pandemic started to fully take hold on the United States right as one of the area’s most important industries, summer camps, began preparing for campers to descend on western North Carolina.
The industry brings in millions of dollars to the county each year.
Today, one area camp is fully operational, Keystone Camp on Cashiers Valley Road. Others have shut their doors completely, while some have pivoted to offering family camp retreats or online camp.
