The Transylvania County Library has announced library card-holders can now reap the full benefits of membership with the NC Cardinal consortium. As of July 14, library patrons can search the NC Cardinal catalog, place holds on materials from libraries across the state, and have them delivered free of charge to their pickup library of choice.
As a member library of the NC Cardinal consortium, local library patrons now have access to nearly 7 million items, including books, movies, music and more, which can easily be borrowed from one of 48 member library systems throughout North Carolina. Transylvania County Library patrons will enjoy priority access to new books, DVDs and audiobooks for six months before those items are available to other Cardinal libraries.
In addition to discovering library materials not owned locally, patrons can use their Transylvania County library card at any NC Cardinal library. Similarly, borrowed materials can be returned to any NC Cardinal library, making it easy to bring things back and borrow items from the extensive collection.
Other new features included with NC Cardinal membership include: increased checkout lengths for most items, up to three automatic renewals (as long as no one is waiting for the item), the option to save history of holds and checkouts, and the benefit of receiving notice of due dates and arrived holds via text message or email. There’s a wealth of new material and online account features for library patrons to explore.
This change takes place amidst a multitude of other updates in library service. The library is now open to the public and has returned to normal hours of operation: Monday 9:30 a.m.-8 p.m., Tuesday 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Wednesday 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Thursday 9:30 a.m.-8 p.m., Friday 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and Saturday 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. It is closed Sundays.
Patrons are encouraged to make quick trips by placing holds through their online accounts or searching the catalog before visiting the library. Patrons are welcome to browse the shelves, and library staff are eager to help find just the right book or movie. Public computers are available for 30-minute sessions and the Rowell Bosse North Carolina Room is available by appointment only. To support community health, some services are unavailable at this time including: meeting rooms, kids’ computers, soft seating, study tables, magazines and newspapers. All returns should be placed in the outside book drops.
Additionally, the Friends of the Library are currently accepting book donations on Mondays and Thursdays, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Library staff is available in person or by phone to answer questions as patrons explore the new online catalog.
