Peter Sommers Burke

Peter Sommers Burke, 82, of Brevard, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 2020, surrounded by his family.

The son of James Raymond Burke and Evelyn Sommers Burke, he was born in Jackson Heights, N.Y., in 1938.

He was married to his beloved wife, Marilyn Joyce McIntire, for 58 years. They met at the University of Kentucky while both were studying there. They were married in Paducah, Ky., and lived in Setauket, Long Island, N.Y., where he worked as a civil engineer, working first as a designer, then in management. The HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lane on the Long Island Expressway was one of his big projects.

They have two daughters, Joyce Sharon and Susan Diane.

He enjoyed tennis, platform tennis, sailing, gardening and his shop, making many projects for his family.

The retirement years were spent in the wonderful community of Connestee Falls near Brevard. He loved living on the lake there, various boating activities, Hiking, tennis and golf.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James R. Burke and Evelyn S. Burke.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; their daughters, Joyce Burke Cron (Dan), and Susan Burke Mullins (Bob); grandchildren, Brendan Burke Cron, Melissa Sarah Cron, Cassandra Lynn Mullins, and Amy Elizabeth Mullins; brother, Barry Burke (Judy), of Florida, and sister-in-law, Lorene McIntire Clark, of Kentucky.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there will not be a service at this time. The family thanks the nurses and staff at Accordius in Brevard for the care given to their loved one.
