The recent letter to the paper defending the practice of kneeling at sporting events deserves some rebuttal.
“The Star Spangled Banner” was sung for the first time at a baseball game in 1918. It is reported that 100,000 soldiers had died in the war and the spontaneous singing of the song took place as tribute to, and in remembrance of, them. It has been a tradition ever since.
“The Star Spangled Banner” became our national anthem in 1931. The United States code (look it up) says when the anthem is played, those in attendance “should” stand. It doesn’t say they are “req...
