If you are ever tempted to think that your single vote couldn’t possibly matter, remember Febb Burn. Who, you might ask, was Febb Burn?
Febb Burn of Moose Creek, Tenn., was college educated and had taught school, but in 1920 she did not have the right to vote. The 19th Amendment to the Constitution had not yet been ratified by the required three-quarters of the states and, indeed, it teetered on the brink of failure. Tennessee was the last hope and it was widely anticipated that the legislature would not vote yes.
