Lake Toxaway Reunion Canceled

The Lake Toxaway School Reunion has been canceled this year due to the COVID-19. Since the reunion last year, the following classmates have passed on: Curtis Banther, Lucy Tinsley Bryson, Martha McKinney Galloway, Jerry Owen and Virginia Price Penland. We extend our sympathy to their families. If you know of anyone that has been omitted, please call Jonnie Fordyce at (828) 329-4063, so their records can be updated. Mark your calendars for the 2021 reunion, which will be held the last Saturday in September.

North Toxaway Baptist Church Food Bank

The North Toxaway Baptist Church Food Bank will be open Saturday, Sept 19, to serve the Lake Toxaway, Sapphire and Quebec communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The food bank is located at 51 Slick Fisher Road, Lake Toxaway, and is open from 10 a.m. until noon every other Saturday. The food bank is operating as a "drive thru" food distribution. Therefore, they ask that all customers remain in their vehicle instead of coming inside the food bank to "shop" for items. The volunteers will sign you in from your parked car. They will bring out the boxes of food and place them in your vehicle. Even if you have never used the food bank before and/or you do not qualify as low income but are temporarily out of work due to the current situation, you are welcome to come and receive food until the pandemic is over and/or you have returned to work. The next food bank is scheduled for Oct. 3. The North Toxaway Baptist Church Food Bank is held every other Saturday.

Playground Open

With the new guidelines from the state we are able to open our playground. Please remember that no dogs are allowed in the playground area, and we ask that you pick up your trash. Thanks so much in keeping this area clean for all the area children to use. We also had mentioned that we have new nets at the basketball hoops and appreciate the generous donation. The weather is perfect for using these great facilities and we hope to see you out there soon.

Riverbend RV Resort

Last Friday night the folks at the Riverbend RV Resort enjoyed pizza from Amato's in Lake Toxaway and music provided by Burning Daylight. There was great food, and it was nice to be sitting outside, easy to practice social distancing and enjoy good company.

The WNC Communities and Dogwood Health Trust grant is helping to boost Western N.C. census numbers. Currently our area is lacking in the numbers who have participated in the census. It is critical for a variety of funding and other issues that we step up. Gay Owens has taken the reins to assist in boosting the numbers and will be in front of the community center from 10 a.m. to noon, every Saturday in September. You can contact Gay at 966-4359 to set up an appointment if these times are not convenient.

Each participant in this enrollment will have their name placed in a raffle to win a small handmade clay bear created by a local artist.

Bargain Barn

Lake Toxaway Community Center Bargain Barn will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 25, and Saturday, Sept. 26. New items are arriving and they will also take donations. They are also available for one-hour appointments. Call (904) 557-1898, if you have a donation. Additional shopping days will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 16, and Saturday, Oct. 17. Standard COVID-19 requirements will be in place masks and social distancing. Thank you for your support.

Help Out Lake Toxaway

Baptist Church

Jan Plemmons is working on a project for the church and is searching for any photos of church, people, etc., from Lake Toxaway Baptist Church. They are working on a history of the church and cemetery and need all the help that they can find. Church and records burned in 1970, so they must rely on people and their family collections to make this happen. Please call or text Jan at (904) 557-1898. Jan wanted to thank everyone in advance.

Hope to see everyone next year for our Friday night events. We sure do miss seeing everyone on Friday night and look forward to seeing everyone in the spring. Stay safe and let us know how you are doing by checking our Facebook page. The Lake Toxaway building rental is closed until further notice. For more information, call Pam Owen at (828) 553-0373. To place information in this article, send email to [email protected]

There are new basketball nets at the community center.
