After enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1975, Dr. Woodsmall retired at the rank of Major in 1993. Backed by the various educational opportunities and experience he received in the military, he pursued his love of teaching and worked as an instructor with ExecuTrain and Bishop State Community College, where he taught total quality management and leadership courses. He was selected Airman of the Year at Scott AFB and Company Grade Officer of the Year at Maxwell AFB.
