On Oct. 21, the Transylvania Habitat for Humanity Board presented Angie Hunter, Habitat's executive director, with the coveted Golden Hammer Award for outstanding performance and contribution to the organization.

Don Campbell, President of the Habitat Board, said "We have been blessed to adopt Angie into our Habitat family."

Hunter started with Habitat on Oct. 7, 2019, as the first executive director of the organization. Since then, two new homeowners have moved into their Habitat homes and volunteers are currently building a home for Bonnie Miller, a future Habitat homeowner.

Also under Hunter's leadership, Habitat purchased 10 lots for future homeowners in Rosman through generous contributions from local donors, including a large donation for whom the neighborhood is named, Don Ross Acres.

Habitat strives to strengthen the community by helping establish stability and teaching self-reliance to their homeowners to help them lead better lives. Prospective Habitat homeowners must currently live in Transylvania County, be living in inadequate housing and unable to obtain a traditional mortgage. They must partner with Habitat throughout the process, performing sweat equity helping to build their own home or work in the ReStore.

Homeowners must also meet certain citizenship and income requirements, have a steady source of income, demonstrate financial responsibility and be able to pay an affordable mortgage which is defined as no more than 30 percent of their income.

Applications are now open for nine homes in Rosman and Habitat encourages anyone to apply who thinks they may meet the qualifications. Income qualifications can be viewed on the website at http://transylvaniahabitat.org/family-selection-2/. Homeownership applications are available at the Habitat Housing Ministry Office at 692 Ecusta Road (behind the ReStore). There is currently no waiting list, so interested individuals and families are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. For more information, contact the Habitat office at (828) 884-3464.
