WCCA Encourages Home Renters To Fill Out Survey – Transylvania County, NC

Western Carolina Community Action (WCCA) assists nearly 200 low-income elderly, disabled and households with minor children in Transylvania County, with rental assistance provided by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) every year. The subsidy amount is set by HUD using methodology that does not accurately reflect the current rental rates for Transylvania County, according to Sheryl Fortune, WCCA’s director of housing program.

“This can be easily illustrated by the fact that the amount of rent they are proposing for 2021 for a two-bedroom house (their benchmark) in Transylvania County is $573 less than for the same two-bedroom house in Henderson county,” she said. “The housing costs in these two counties are not significantly different.

“In order to appeal this apparent flaw in HUD’s methodology, WCCA must provide very specific and recent local rent data. WCCA has commissioned a rent survey for Transylvania County to be performed by Econometrica.

“Letters will soon be sent to renters in the county, and it is imperative to the success of the survey that the households who receive the survey respond and understand that it is a legitimate survey that may help their less fortunate neighbors. Their responses will be confidential and anonymous.”
