Moving into November has been a nice change thus far from Novembers in the past. This is our month of giving thanks leading into Thanksgiving Day on Nov. 26. One of the things I am so thankful for is seeing all the campaigns signs being removed from the roadsides. Congratulations to our local candidates who won, and thank you to the ones who have served us so diligently for the past several years.
Aunt Nellie Story
As my Aunt Nellie got into her 80s, she became very thin and would be cold in the winter, and really experience cold year-round. After visiting her one day and seeing how she would sit so close to her wood heater, I decided I had the solution. I would buy her a sweat suit. I was so excited when I took it to her. Well, she informed me right off that Papa told his girls (nine of them) do not wear “breeches.” She proceeded to tell me about the one time she had a pair of “breeches” on. It was a bitter cold winter day and Papa needed help cutting wood. She put on a pair of “breeches” and after just a few minutes working with Papa, they saw the preacher coming. Nellie had to run for the bank house and get inside. She about froze in there as the preacher had a long visit. When I took her the sweat suit, her Papa had been dead for at least 50 years. She was not going to put on a pair of “breeches.” A good lesson for parents; children remember what they are told.
Quebec Community experienced a power outage when the hurricane passed through a couple of weeks ago. My husband and I were without power for 25 hours. From this time forward as I empty plastic jugs, I will be filling them with water and setting them in the garage. At least we can flush our toilets. Thank you, utility workers, for all the hard work. Stay safe.
Thyra Chapman and Susan Wilson have celebrated birthday this month.
Prayer wishes and praise report for Greg McCall, who will be coming home this week after a heart procedure at Mission Hospital. As his mother, Norma McCall, says, if your child is 2 or 62, we always have them in our prayers at a time of need.
Congratulations to McKenzie Mason and his new bride, who were married on Oct. 31. McKenzie is the grandson of Jeanette Mason and the late Johnny Mason.
Condolences to the family of Iva Lee Chapman of Rosman, who passed away recently. Iva Lee was one of these people who when you were in her presence you felt like you were the most important person in the world.
Condolences to the family of Ray Jones, who also passed recently. “Dapper Ray,” as we called him in school, was always dressed as if he were headed to church.
Also, condolences to the family of Marty Luker.
These people will be missed by family and friends.
Faith Baptist had a small “Fall for Jesus” party on Oct. 28 for the children. Pizza was served. Faith is continuing its “Marriage Ministry” on Sunday evenings on the second and fourth Sundays of each month. A light supper is provided.
Oak Grove continues with its playground extension.
