Local VFW Awards Essay Contest Winners – Brevard, NC

On Dec. 9, Steve Powell and Ray McCall visited Brevard High and Rosman Elementary schools to present awards to the winners of the VFW Post 4309 Voice of Democracy Essay Contest and for the Citizen Education Awards (Teachers of the Year).

For Brevard High School, Emma L. Coye, a junior, was selected as the winner for the 2020 Voice of Democracy Essay Contest. Her essay was entitled, "Is This the Country the Founding Fathers Envisioned?" Coye was awarded a certificate and a cash prize by Powell, Senior Vice Commander, and McCall, Past Adjutant of VFW Post 4309.

Col. Benjamin Blankenship, Commander of the Transylvania County JROTC, was recognized as the recipient of the 2020 Citizen Education Award (Teacher of the Year) for the high school category. At Rosman Elementary School, teacher Tammy Buckner was awarded the 2020 Citizen Education Award (Teacher of the Year) for the elementary school category.
