Quiet Holiday Period For Crime

Transylvania County first responders reported mostly slow weekends back-to-back over the Christmas and New Year’s holiday.

“I won’t say that it was unusual, but it was refreshing,” said Brevard Police Chief Phil Harris of the rather calm holiday season in Brevard.

The Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) reported just one incident and felony arrest between Christmas and New Year’s for a breaking and entering of a motor vehicle charge.

The suspect, 35-year-old Brevard man Cole Iceman Lee was arrested on Dec. 28 and placed in the county detention center under a $5,000 bond.

On Dec. 28, TCSO also reported an incident of “all other larceny” on Peacock Lane in Penrose.

The N.C. Highway Patrol reported a similarly quiet weekend, with just three wrecks between Christmas and New Year’s and one DWI incident, which occurred on Dec. 28.

Though not law related to law enforcement, first responders at the Transylvania County Rescue Squad did have a busy end-of-year in 2020.

TCRS made three rescues between Dec. 20 and Jan. 1, all to lost hikers out in Pisgah National Forest.

On Dec. 20, TCRS responded to a call at around 9 p.m. from the Pink Beds Loop Trail in Pisgah National Forest from lost hikers. Rescues were able to escort them back to the parking lot.

On Dec. 29, TCRS again responded to a call in Pisgah National Forest to a hiker experiencing a medical emergency on the Looking Glass Rock Trail.

Rescuers located the patient not far from the parking area. The patient was evaluated and declined transport to the hospital.

TCRS returned to the same trail on Dec. 31 to help locate a lost hiker who had wandered off the trail near the summit of the rock around 7:55 p.m. The search team was able to locate the lost hiker around 10 p.m. and assist him back to the parking area, according to the TCRS Facebook page.
