The Transylvania Times -

Good Leadership

I was disappointed but not surprised by the results of the Transylvania County Commissioners election. I had really hoped that Page Lemel and Mike Hawkins would be elected. Both of them had been lifelong Republicans but had the integrity and courage to stand up against a bully who has intimidated and corrupted the political party they loved.

Page and Mike were very good leaders of the county commissioners and helped reasonable Republicans and other conservatives with a conscience work with dedicated Democrats for the good of all. Under their leadership, the working relationship between Transylvania County and the City of Brevard was the best it has ever been.

Hopefully, Teresa McCall and Jason Chappell are reasonable Republicans, but Larry Chapman clearly is not. Under his leadership in the past, the working relationship between the county and city was the worst it has ever been. I believe this is because there is a much higher percentage of registered Democrats in the city than the county as a whole.

Please do not give him any leadership role in the new county commission. In past Opinions of the Readers, he has attacked the NAACP. Right now the NAACP is working with the county sheriff to protect our community. By working together we can prevent white supremacist organizations such as the Proud Boys, who are attacking black churches in Washington, D.C., from endangering us here in Transylvania County.
