The Hunger Coalition Of Transylvania County

The mission of The Hunger Coalition of Transylvania County is to strengthen the existing food distribution network, engage additional resources to combat hunger and increase access to healthier food options.

They strive to identify unmet needs in the county, propose innovative solutions for gaps in the network, partner with existing agencies, such as the Manna Food Bank, to provide needed resources and ensure that everyone has access to healthy, affordable food. Donations and grant money make it possible to buy meat for distribution.

Their core values include respect and dignity of the clients they serve, collaboration, and responsiveness to their partners and openness to innovations and creative ideas.

The focus of the Hunger Coalition is distribution, nutrition, education on network, to engage additional resources to combat hunger and to increase access to healthier food options.

The coalition uses an old U-Haul truck to bring food to the Brevard, Rosman and surrounding communities. On Thursdays, they distribute food at Davidson River School on Ecusta Road between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. The truck goes to the Champion Pool Park in Rosman from 3-4 p.m. on the second Thursday each month.

No one is turned away. No one asks your name and no one asks your financial status. The food is free to all comers. You may also pick up food for other needy families. Barbara and William Grimm, along with volunteers, make this all possible.

Thank you so much for your work to ease hunger in the county.

Barbara Grimm can be reached at (828) 577-3795 if you have questions or would like to donate or volunteer your time.

Sherwood Forest

Consider joining Sherwood Forest Friends for 2021. We are a 501(c)3 organization and have enjoyed partnering with Cedar Mountain in activities in the past. We are a nonprofit group to promote, enhance and preserve the natural resources and cultural heritage in the vicinity of Sherwood Forest and Cedar Mountain. We hope this year we can gather in person and get back to our mission: preserving the culture of this area and conserving land and keeping it undeveloped. Looking ahead, we want to promote the importance of dark skies, sponsor a Hike ’n Bike event and offer sessions with a variety of speakers and entertainers. Send a check for $50, $100 or $250 to Sherwood Forest Friends, Box 212, Cedar Mountain, 28718. A membership is perfect for everyone who values the natural world.

Christine’s Corner

By Christine Pace

I was informed of another January birthday. Casey Bishop was celebrated on Jan. 4. Hope you had lots of cake and ice cream, Casey.

On a side note, one January birthday I mentioned a couple of weeks ago was for Joee Taylor. Probably through auto-correct, the second “e” in her first name was dropped. Yes, her first name is spelled Joee and pronounced Joey. She’s a special lady.

Christine’s List

“List,” you ask? This past week I have been hearing a lot about lists; make a list of things you want to get accomplished while staying at home, and so on. So, I made a list, and then revised my list. Then, when a neighbor dropped by and I asked her to take a couple of “get well” cards I’d written to the mailbox, she asked, “Was that on your list?” It wasn’t, but I added it, and then checked it off right away.

And just today I got a telephone call from a dear friend whom I hadn’t talked to in months. She said, “I have a list of 10 things to do each day, and you are on today’s list for me to call.” Ten things each day? Wow, I admire this dear lady even more now. So, she will be on my list, as soon as I finish my current list (which has almost 30 things) and start another.

COVID-19 Shots

Adding to the stress of staying home (mostly) and trying not to stress about that, there are now posts about when and who can get their COVID-19 vaccine in Transylvania County (as was reported in Monday’s Transylvania Times). On Nextdoor (an online site) it was posted that “folks aged 75 and over were eligible for a COVID-19 shot” later this week. I’m not old enough, but I shared the information with another who is. Of course, all slots were full when she called. For future appointments, the Transylvania Health Department’s appointment number is (828) 884-4007. I hope this helps.

Good For A Smile

A few things I’ve heard, or read, or thought up myself may get a smile or even a laugh from you. I hope so. Since we’re in quarantine we’ll be making “inside” jokes (ahem). After 121 days at home, I now know why the dogs chew the furniture. Speaking of chewing, all stress-eating does during COVID-19 is ensures that the buttons on my shirt are social distancing.

Car Names

I bought a new-used car on the last day of 2020. My old Chrysler had given up. In Brevard, I got a great deal on a “used” 2020 Kia Soul. Only 10,000 miles, so I’m still breaking it in. Having to get used to a much smaller, lighter and brighter vehicle. I didn’t know the newer cars no longer have CD players. That’s sad, as I often borrow books-on-CDs from the library. Since I got this “Inferno red” SUV many folks ask if I’ve named her yet (her?). I haven’t. Do you name your vehicles? Please let me know if you do, at [email protected] Finally, with this new fun-to-drive car, I decided to throw a dart at an enlarged map of the USA (thinking of taking a car trip when COVID-19 is done). Looks like I’ll be going behind the fridge.

Stay well, my friends and neighbors.

Around The House

By Linda Young

I was one of the lucky ones to get an appointment for my COVID-19 vaccination this Thursday. This is the only time I felt fortunate that being old and decrepit paid off. I finally got most of my Christmas decorations put away. Instead of hanging out in my closet all year I put my Christmas vests in with the decorations to be stored. I still have a lot of downsizing (cleaning out) to do if I can just get motivated to do it.
