Brevard Tax-Aide Prepares For Filing Season

Tax time is approaching. Do you know what deductions you’re able to take? How you can get the tax credits you deserve, including the Recovery Rebate Credit associated with last year’s Economic Impact Payment? Will you get a refund or have to pay?

AARP Tax-Aide in Brevard is making plans to assist Transylvania County residents with the preparation and filing of their 2020 tax returns. This is the AARP Foundation program that provides tax assistance free of charge to taxpayers who have low to moderate income. AARP membership is not required and there are no age limits.

Tax-Aide services are expected to begin in early February and continue through April 15. Final decisions are still being made to provide tax assistance around COVID-19 and concerns for the safety of both taxpayers and volunteer tax preparers. As taxpayers will not come into the office this year, a process is being developed for “car service” and telephone contact to have local AARP certified tax preparers complete and file tax returns. When plans are finalized and Tax-Aide is ready to take appointments, an announcement will be made in The Transylvania Times.

Taxpayers who used AARP Foundation Tax-Aide in 2019 received $1.6 billion in income tax refunds and more than $200 million in Earned Income Credits (EITCs). They also avoided any tax preparation fees and pitches for high-interest tax credit or refund loans.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest volunteer-run free tax preparation service. Volunteers are trained and IRS-certified every year to ensure they understand the latest changes to the U.S. Tax Code.
