A Shout Out To Our Local Library

Servant leadership is exemplified by consistently noticing a problem at hand and then rising to the occasion in whatever way possible to be part of the solution, never seeking self-aggrandizement in the process. Our very own local library with its dedicated, quiet, and consistently kind staff epitomizes servant leadership.

Early on in this pandemic, when people were scrambling, canceling plans, confused as to direction, the staff at our library huddled and found a way to continue serving us. Through all kinds of weather, they zipped out to our cars to hand over our pre-requested items. For many, books and DVDs have become a primary source of entertainment through these bleak days. It should be noted, they turned on a dime to do all this in an organized and pandemic-safe manner when most other libraries in the nation simply remained shuttered.

Again and again the Transylvania County library has come to the fore, offering programming and ongoing educational opportunities for fun to kids and families.

And now, in the face of the overwhelming crush of increased workload on the local health department, it is again the library staff and leadership stepping forward to serve as a call center to make appointments for those wishing vaccination against COVID. The single phone line at the Health Department is often overwhelmed as they have stepped up to do contact tracing, and assist groups with outbreaks of COVID, all on top of continuing their normal business and work of caring for mothers, babies, all other usual vaccinations and environmental health work. The library has again stepped up to help. They will serve as the much needed “extra phone lines” to make appointments in this time when we need vaccines to be efficiently delivered.

Thank you to each and every one of you who so willingly serve our community – every day.
