Transylvania County SCORE has presented Maureen Copelof its Extra Mile Award for her work in the city and community.
SCORE mentors unanimously voted to bestow the honor on Copelof.
In 2020, Copelof was a “guiding light,” according to SCORE, for her work with the Railroad Avenue Depot and its gardens and birdhouses; the emerging dog park and its “Buy a Brick” fundraising; the playground at Silversteen; the skate park; the expanded outdoor dining areas downtown and the new downtown light initiative, as well as her efforts on the Brevard City Council.
Copelof grew up at various locations around New England. When she was a teenager, her family moved to Charleston, S.C., where her father, Dr. Tom Mahan, taught at the Citadel.
She attended the University of South Carolina and received a bachelor’s degree in religion in 1974 and a Master of Business Administration in 1978.
She joined the United States Navy in 1979. Her career field was electronic communications. She joined just as the Armed Services were expanding opportunities for women, and she loved the responsibility the Navy gave her and the leadership training it provided. She served all over the world for the next 30 years, retiring at the rank of Captain (O-6 or Colonel in the other services). The Navy taught her leadership, taught her how to be a team player and a team builder. It also taught her that the best decisions come from listening to all sides of an issue and to value the diversity of opinion and background of the people with whom she worked.
While in the Navy, she studied at the Air and Command Staff College and went to Auburn University at night to get a master’s degree in political science.
This Extra Mile Award is the first one that the Transylvania County SCORE has presented in 2021, which recognizes the people and businesses in this community who go above and beyond. Maureen Copelof was a unanimous decision by the SCORE mentors.
