Courthouse Committee To Take Hiatus

We represent the Ad Hoc Citizens’ Courthouse Committee that has been meeting for several years to assist the county government in their decision on locating a new county courthouse. We write to update you that after learning that the county does not intend to move forward with a decision anytime soon, we have decided to suspend our regular meetings for the time being, but will reconvene when this decision process begins again.

Further, we would like to recognize the city of Brevard’s efforts to assist in our interest in keeping the new courthouse next to the old one in the center of downtown Brevard. The city offered to provide dedicated parking for the new courthouse, as well as the availability of some portion of the property the city owns and is now under contract, if needed to keep the courthouse in its current location.

Our committee believes the new courthouse needs can be met at that site next to the existing courthouse without the parcel the city now intends to sell. This is especially so going forward because the COVID-19 pandemic has taught the courts how to function differently with remote conferencing, so not as much dedicated space will be needed in future courthouses.

Thank you and all the citizens of our great county who have expressed an interest in keeping the courthouse in the center of Brevard.
